Lately a lot of Indie Games have displayed excellent quality, and imparted experiences above and beyond some of the AAA titles popular in the market. Games like Journey, Limbo, Gone Home, The Binding of Isaac, Fez, Bastion, Path of Exile, and so many more games have showcased that Indie games can truly redefine immersive experience in Gaming today, and have exemplified how strong a medium Video Games can be to tell a great, evocative story and captivate the player’s mind in deep, complex and enjoyable gameplay.
So, here’s a list of some upcoming Indie Games that show a lot of promise and will hopefully take Video games in new, exciting and unexplored directions!!
1. ABZU
From developer Giant Squid (formed by Matt Nava, Art Director for the PS3 hit Journey) comes this beautiful debut game. Shown only once on E3 so far, the trailer shows the promise of another experience like Journey. The game also features music by Austin Wintory, who was also responsible the musical score for Journey.
2. Rime
This is an upcoming Open World Adventure game by developer Tequila Works, being released exclusively for Playstation 4. The creative Director for the game has named movies like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away as influences, which can only mean good things for Rime!! And, the cel-shaded art style looks really great.
3. Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture
Developed by The Chinese Room, and said to be a spiritual successor to Dear Esther, this is a story driven open world game. And, anything to do with Dear Esther can only be good news. Oh, and finally the CryEngine will be put to use in a quality production.
4. No Man’s Sky
Science Fiction, exploration and adventure come together in this unique game from Hello Games, to be released as a timed exclusive for the PS4. The game had received quiet a lot of attention with promise of an epic sense of adventure in a procedurally generated open universe.
5. Secret Ponchos
Set in the West, Secret Ponchos is a Top View, Online Shooter/Fighting Game, developed by Switchblade Monkeys. With a unique art style and fast paced gameplay, this is sure to interest those who enjoy arcade style games.
6. The Witness
Designed by Jonathan Blow, creator of Braid, this is an “exploration-puzzle game set on a uninhabited island”. It’s set to be released as a timed exclusive for the PS4. The game so far looks great and some clever puzzles have been demonstrated, which is sure to attract a lot of gamers, specially those who have enjoyed the challenge of Braid.
7. Ori And The Blind Forest
Developed by Moon Studios, this is a platform adventure game, exclusive to the Xbox consoles only. The gameplay trailers so far show deep thematic values and beautiful visuals. The game has been inspired by Rayman and Metroid franchises.
8. Hyper Light Drifter
Said to be a combination of Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past and Diablo, this is a 2D action Role Playing Game. The lead developer, Alex Preston has cited Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind as inspiration for the game’s world. The game places emphasis on music and visuals to tell it’s story. instead of narrative.
9. White Night
Developed by an Indie studio called Osome, White Night is a third person adventure game that combines puzzle and survival horror elements while taking its inspiration from the cult game Alone in the Dark. An adventure inspired by strong cinematographic references to Hitchcock, Polanski, Lynch, etc, the game uses black and white to build up a solid, visual identity and is directly connected to the game design and the story.
10. Apotheon
This is a 2D action-RPG set in ancient Greek mythology. As humanity’s last champion, you must pass through the land of the dead, infiltrate Mont Olympus and end the wrath of the Gods. the game features both action and stealth elements, and the art style richly resonates the sense of the fantastic and the mythological.
11. Elegy for a Dead World
Explore dead civilizations, write about what you find, and share your stories with the universe: yes, a game about writing fiction. Elegy for a Dead World is a side-scrolling exploration game where the player writes a diary visible to other players. The player explores three worlds inspired by British romantic poets Shelley, Byron, and Keats. While exploring, the player makes notes on their observations.
12. The Long Dark
From Hinterland studios, The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration focused survival simulation set in the Northern wilderness in the aftermath of a global disaster. Brave the elements and other survivors, hunt for supplies, explore the world, uncover the mystery, answer the question: How far will you go to survive?
